4.18 The qualities and characteristics of POLY4, confirmed through more than 2,500 field demonstrations to date on over 80 crops, can contribute towards addressing the long-term challenges the agricultural industry is facing. This includes:  increasing crop yields by 3-5% compared to standard practices;  comparative lower carbon footprint; and  supporting soil health. 4.19 Through these qualities, Polyhalite helps to tackle the three key challenges facing global food security today:  the increasing demand for food in the context of competing demands on land;  the need to reduce the environmental impact of farming  the deteriorating health of soils. 4.20 Once operational, the Woodsmith Project will help the UK become a major global fertiliser producer and leader in sustainable food production. Ensuring the UK is well placed to meet one of the most pressing challenges facing the world today, and future decades. It can also reduce the UK’s trade deficit by up to 10% and consolidate the UK’s global Agri-Tech position.
