5 Delivering wider local and community benefits

Creating a long-lasting legacy

5.1 This report has set out the enormous scale of the benefits of the Woodsmith Project at a national, regional and local level through construction and operation including high levels of job creation and its contribution to economic growth and exports. 5.2 Through its social investment Anglo American is also committed to having a broader social and economic impact in the local area, with these benefits magnified and intensified through partnership working. 5.3 The company does this through its Collaborative Regional Development (CRD) model. CRD is an approach that involves extensive research and analysis, and engaging a wide range of stakeholders to understand the socio-economic issues in the area. Anglo American then identifies where it is best placed to make a difference and works in partnership to design and deliver activities that aim to address the challenges and realise the opportunities in the local area.

Thriving Communities Programme

5.4 The Thriving Communities programme is the foundation of the company’s approach towards delivering wider social benefits. Its activities fall under four key strands which each help to contribute towards a thriving community – Education, Livelihoods, Health and Neighbourhoods. The work under each is summarised in table below.
