GDP impacts
4.12 Extractive industries like mining have very high levels of added-value, the main component of GDP, because they have relatively low operating costs and a high value product. Based on Anglo American’s forecasts, GVA as a percentage of sales will be as high as 77%. 4.13 Quod has estimated GVA based on Anglo American’s revenue forecast minus its purchases of materials and services, excluding labour. This level of GVA is significant in the context of local productivity challenges – equivalent to 6% of the current size of the York and North Yorkshire economy. 4.14 As with employment, an equivalent multiplier effect will also add to GDP. This is lower than for employment because of the high level of GVA and proportionately lower level of purchases from the supply chain.

The role of Polyhalite in Global Food Security
Global food security is one of the most important challenges of our age
4.15 Global food security is one of the most important challenges facing the world today. The global population is expected to grow by 1.44 billion by 2050 34 , generating an estimated 60% increase in demand for food production. 4.16 Managing the need for increased global food production is complex and increasingly requires innovative sustainable farming solutions. University of Sheffield academics estimate that the world has lost a third of its arable land due to erosion or pollution in the past 40 years 35 .
4.17 In the context of declining soil health and a reduction in arable land, correctly applied fertiliser will play a key role in meeting the global needs for food production by increasing the yield and
