Strand & Aim
Progress and objectives resilience and grow, and to work collaboratively to support the adoption of more sustainable practices. Turning Tides is Anglo American’s programme to support 15 - 21 year olds from across the local area to improve their emotional wellbeing. Through the provision of long-term coaching, it is designed to provide flexible and person centred support to participants build coping strategies, confidence and resilience. Over the two-year pilot programme, 221 young people have been supported, with 75% reporting meaningful improvements in their wellbeing. The aim of the pilot is to build an evidence base which highlights the need for preventative support before young people reach crisis point and thereby help to reduce pressure on mental health services for young people, which are already stretched. Having successfully completed the pilot programme in February 2026, work is ongoing to take this learning and engage with partners and potential match-funding organisations to extend the programme across the area. This element supports the implementation of relatively small scale projects in the communities closest to our sites. This includes footpath maintenance, fencing, hedge cutting and tree planting, painting and decorating, and maintenance projects in and around village halls, schools, churches and other community spaces. Since 2021, over 200 projects have been completed.
